Akira
Akira is inspired from the very popular manga with the same name created by Katsuhiro Otomo, manga that spanned from 1982 to 1990. When the film was released, the manga was not even finished. After a war has destroyed Tokyo, another city has been rebuild on the ruins of the old one, and called Neo-Tokyo. A city full of thugs on motorcycles and troubled by complicated politics and maneuvers.
The leader of one of these gangs – Kaneda and his friend Tetsuo, get the unwanted attention of a military organization. The colonel leading this organization, Shikishima, soon discovers that Tetsuo posses highly powerful mental abilities, pretty similar with a boy-subject called Akira, who was the cause of the war some dozens of years ago.
The plot is very complicated, full of implications and involving many characters and when the movie ends the spectator is left with many unanswered questions. It also explores many themes, including cyberpunk, nuclear holocaust and a number of subjects more close to philosophy. Akira was the first anime film to use the technology of lip synchronizing, a normal fact considering the high budget of the movie.
