Berserk volume 2

Well, here I am again with the review of the second volume from Berserk. Unfortunately, Kentaro Miura seems to have forgotten his warrior in favor of a weird Japanese game that he plays to obsession. But hey, we still have 33 volumes of Berserk to enjoy until we face the nothingness.

This second volume is called The Guardians of Desire and it is split in two chapters. Is the same Dark Horse edition like the first, and it will be read from the end of the book as usual. After the end of the first volume, Guts has caught up with a different demon, who lives in another castle. This demon used to be a count, who had a wife and an daughter and he was a righteous ruler. But a strange sect abducted his wife and made her perform sick perverted rituals in which she died. Soon after that, the count changed, and made an evil pact with some terrible occult forces. He became a disgusting demon, a so called Apostle and forgot his humanity. His daughter remained to live imprisoned in a tower, a sad little girl left without mother.

Searching for this monster, Guts and the elf Puck meet a little distorted man, Vargas, who used to be in the service of the count. And what surprise he has for Guts when he shows him a unique Behelit, usually just a weird spooky charm but in this case a key to meet the cruel Gods called The God Hand. No spoiler about the God Hand yet ;) The Behelit usually find its way to the person that is most likely to accept the pact so that he can escape from the mortal life and join the gods above. Those who have the Brand sign on their bodies, like Guts, are destined to be sacrified for the ascending to be possible. Soon, Guts is forced to fight  Lord Zondark, a powerful warrior who has been transformed in a demon by the count Vargas. The battle is truly epic but even more bigger battles will follow.

I observed a small improvement in Miura’s artwork, who keeps improving his drawing skills even further. The story in this volume is what you can call furious battle+revelations, but the best of the saga is yet to come. You will be surprised by the monstrosity and strangeness of the demons, terrible shapes conceived by the imagination of Kentaro Miura.  With this voulme, the reader will sunk even further in this fascinating and cruel universe that is Berserk. And it only gets better, which each volume.
