Anime is an English term for the word “animation”, originating from the Japanese manga – the Japanese word for all comic books. In Japan, the word “anime” originally described all animation (not only the Japanese one), but the English terms refers only to the animation that is produced in Japan. With no doubts, it can be said that anime is culture. It belongs to the popular (pop) culture, more precisely. Popular, because it is not meant for an elite audience, although it can be said that between its fans, some are elite fans.

For the general anime public, anime fulfills their needs and it is judged by a few characteristics. Power to entertain, visual appeal and the capacity to make them wanting for more. For a minority from the same anime audience, anime is judged through some deeper more complex perspectives. …

Doraemon is the longest running anime in history? It started in 1973 and its has over 2000 episodes. It is inspired from the manga created by Fujiko F. Fujio. The original Doraemon season had 26 episodes and was produced by Nippon Television, but it failed to impress the public. In 1979, Shin’ei Animation and TV Asashi took over and they managed to make 1024 episodes, with great success. The newest Doraemon series was produced by Studio Pierrot, and it began in 2005.

This letter registers my extreme disgust at the turn your network has taken of late. The recent addition of live-action, animation-free programs has ripped apart my faith in your network and threatens my continued viewership.

A bit of background first. I’ve been a fan of Cartoon Network since the beginning. Steamboy is the most expensive anime ever to be produced? It took 26 million dollars to finish it. The anime film aired in 2004, was  directed by Katsuhiro Otomo (the creator of Akira – both the anime and the manga) and produced by Sunrise. Steamboy was in production for more than 10 years.
