Guin Saga: episode 8 review

7 June 2009 by Andrei No Comment

After a very good episode seven, which started shaky but ended great, I can compare this anime with a great but inconstant football goalkeeper. Making mistakes but doing extraordinary saves that makes you forgot everything he’s done bad. Saying bad things about animation in each episode review i guess is normal by now. Everything else on this anime surpasses its animation. For other anime is the totally opposite. Nothing bad with the animation in this episode anyway. Everything looked OK.

So, we left Guin and the Sems after they won a first battle against the mongauls. After the defeat, Amnelis decides it is better to proceed to the total annihilation of the Sems. During this, Istvan infiltrates the mongaul camp AGAIN. There seems to be a connection between Istvan and Marius, which will be revealed later i guess. I don’t know how the mercenary always manages to go in the mongaul camp and escape unnoticed. Amnelis could work a little on the security.

Back at the their camp, Guin knows that if the war continues more, the Sems will be eventually defeated by the huge numbers of the enemy. Also, we are shown some random scenes with Remus and Linda, which makes me think that the producers don’t know yet what to do with these two characters. They look stuck to me and they have not done something important yet. Guin goes in the desert too look for the Logons, a race of giants that Guin hopes that he convince to be his allies. One little magic moments follows here, at least for me. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, you will love this one. Before departing, Guin says the he will be back with the Lagons before the sunset on the fourth day. Exactly like Gandalf before he rides to bring back Eomer with his riders, in the eve of battle at Helm’s Deep. And Guin quickly leaves on his horse, like Gandalf on Shadowfax.

In the desert, Guin has a vision which slips some more intriguing facts about his origin and we can also see Dog’s Head mountain in the splendor of the night. Finally, he arrives at the land where it is thought that the Lagon giants live and he finds a translucid object that is supposed to be the soul of the Lagon.

Back at the Mongaul camp, Amnelis gives the sign for another mongaul attack on Nospherus. I am beginning to think she is very stupid, or naive, if she thinks that after one day of rest they will just march back and win. Well, this was an episode with a minimum amount of fighting, but many happened and thus i can say it is a very important build-up episode, leading towards a possibly alliance with the giants Lagon and another incoming battle with the Mongauls. And maybe some new characters. With Guin being the only main character from this anime (I cant count Amnelis in here), I think another imposing figure will be welcomed. And I think it is time that Guin will face a more powerful adversary. Until now he had them all for lunch, without too much trouble. Thumbs up for this episode as well.
