It is the TV series that started the legend of Gundam and the mecha genre. It aired from 1979 to 1980, lasting 43 episodes. The original name was Freedom Fighter Gunboy, but it changed its name in Mobile Suit Gundam. Created by the legendary Sunrise studios, the series was written and directed by Yoshiuki Tomino. The man responsible for the design of the iconic Gundams was Kunio Okawara. In the same year it aired, the series won the Animage Anime Grand Prix (Animage is a very famous Japanese anime magazine), despite not being very popular at that time in Japan. The glory came later, when Bandai started to sell Gundam action figures. In 1981, the series was edited into three movies, for release in cinemas.

We are in the year 0079, the Universal Century. The humanity conquered space, where they made space colonies. But the war still rages on. The humans are split in opposed sides, called, well… Sides. The story concentrates on the battle between the Earth Federation and The Principality of Zeon, who wants to obtain its independence and no longer to be part of the Federation. The whole world is engulfed in war. Zeon’s new weapon of war is a type of giant robot, called humanoid mobile suits.

When the colony called Side 7 is attacked by Zeon’s mobile suits – Zaku I and II, its citizens discover the RX-78-2 Gundam, and they successfully defend the colony with it. The man who accidentaly gets  to pilot the Gundam is Amuro Ray, son of a federation weapon engineer. The RX-78-2 Gundam is a close combat mobile suit, protected by a Luna  Titanium Armor. It’s weapons consist in 2 Vulcan Guns, 2 Beam Sabers, a beam Rifle and a super advanced computer who can learn from the pilot. It was developed in a secret project called Project Victory.

This year the mighty Gundam will commemorate 30 years of existence.
