Proof of an Otaku existence

otaku signs copy

I have read this article based on a poll conducted in Japan, which reveals the top yen fashion choices of an Otaku. They forgot to mention that in this case its about an Anime Otaku. Cause there are a bunch of Otaku types. This list refers to the Japanese Anime Otaku type, just remember that. But again, this list is a bunch of crap. Well, what I see are things that are pretty common in any fan or every average person you see on the street, not only anime related. I mean, lets take them in order.

Anime T-shirts

Why is so surprising? All over the world people are wearing T-shirts with their favorite music band, their favorite movie, their favorite actor etc. Why are anime T-shirts so special? It just shows the love that we have for this art form. Wearing an Anime T-shirt makes me less than an Apple geek who wears a T-shirt with iPhone? Or why is that cool and this is otaku geeky? Proves nothing. A common accessory for anyone that loves an art, a thing, a movie or whatever.

Anime shopping bag

Is this a bag specially made for anime shopping? Or is it a bag with some anime characters/logo/symbols on it? Or both? After goggling for some, I just can say this. They are cool shopping accessories. I don’t use one so I cannot say too many about it. I guess in Japan the anime shopping bags are pretty common. Way cooler than… lets say a MacDonald’s shopping bag. Shopping with style.

Fanny/belt bags

PRACTICALITY! You don’t want to open your backpack for any small stuff that you need or buy? Good for nickels, change, tissues and such. A common sight amongst all campers and hitchhikers out there. Not mentioning the parking lot boy who gives you the ticket. Is he an Otaku too?

Bandanna

For sweat man! All that anime shopping makes you sweaty. Common amongst tennis and rugby players too.

Anime badges/buttons on the bag

Why would you keep your badges in your pocket or backpack? They are BADGES. They are meant to be seen. That’s why they do them, right?

Long hair

Bullshit. Uncut hair doesn’t mean long hair. Long hair is something that a rocker would wear. How can you read all those manga volumes with that hair coming in your face? But, any person with long hair is seen as an Otaku in Japan? Wtf.

Wearing a backpack over both shoulders

And how a backpack should be weared? It has two shoulder straps. Why would anyone use only one? Another bullshit. It would bang all over your back all the time.Having two free hands is a killer isn’t it?

Big, thick glasses

Now that’s discrimination. Some people have bad eyesight. Is like making fun about a man in a wheelchair. If an old man, with a tucked shirt, a pair of chemical wash jeans, a bandana and a pair of thick glasses is walking on the street, and you see him, what would you think about him? Is he an Otaku? No.

Tucked shirt/t-shirt

Just lack of fashion sense. This one is a hit. Nothing to say. But again, any person with lack of fashion can do this. By no means restricted to otaku.

Chemical wash jeans

Just because you have seen in in Densha Otoko doesn’t mean every Anime Otaku wears one. And its the next big hip thing ;) Just go in Akihabara and try a pair. Its already a fashion icon.

Backpacks are made to be slung on 2 shoulders. Though there are kinds that only have 1 belt, it’s really tiring on the neck and back to carry those around.

That being said, I can’t and absolutely won’t stand to wear a shirt that has a character on it, since I hate being stared at. On conventions, perhaps… or if it’s a character I really like.

Well, I don’t wear anime T-shirts because I prefer to spend my money on other things. But I have a Mighty Thor T-shirt :D Also, I have a backpack that I use to go to work with. Its green and I use it to carry my mp4 player, cables and other stuff that I randomly use during work time.

I don’t get how a belt bag makes one an anime otaku o_O

Haha! I like those defenses. It’s true that possessing those stuff don’t necessarily mean they’re anime fans. Heck, I believe the real otaku don’t even wear any or much of those stuff. haha!

But well, those are just the otaku stereotypes I guess. Stereotypes aren’t 100% accurate. Some are just too discriminating though =_= Like the glasses . . . that would make a lot of the elderly as otaku since most of them have poor eyesight. Haha!

Backpack straps over two shoulders makes you an Otaku? Well in that case, every single person I’ve seen with a backpack on since the 90′s is an Otaku. No one really uses one strap anymore.

That’s probably the only thing on the list that applies to me. I don’t own anime anything, nor do I tuck in my shirt, or have chemical wash jeans. I used to have long hair (like a year ago) but I have since cut it, and will not be growing it out again.

    Proof of an Otaku existence…

When spending time in Japan its always helpful to know how to spot a real life ‘otaku’. A quick guide to helping you spot one in the wild of Akehabara….
