Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas 2

In this second part, we find more about the place called the Sanctuary, where Tenma begins his training to become one of the Saints of Athena. It is located in Greece, and is the ancient home of Athena’s Saints, those who protect and serve peace and justice all over the world.

There are 12 Zodiac Houses, and each is guarded by a Golden Saint. Also, in the Sanctuary lives Athena, which incarnates from time to time in another person, same as Hades does.

We can see Tenma training, with all the ups and downs of the process, and his meeting with Sasha (which I thought its Alone’s sister but it isn’t), a friend that lived with him and Alone in the same orphanage (there you go). He doesn’t know, but the girl is the impersonation of Athena on earth. But just by seeing Sasha, his morale gains a boost of confidence.

His happiness doesn’t last long thou. An agent of Hades appears from the ground, and his target is Sasha. Seeing her in danger gives Tenma the motivation to release his power, but… he misses. It is Sasha’s turn to fight for Tenma, as she unleashes the power of Athena, but the Agent of Hades is destroyed by a Golden Saint that arrives at the scene.

Two years later, Tenma gives his final exam to become a Saint. He gains easily against a much bigger opponent, and he also saves him from being crushed by a huge rock. This leaves no one in doubt that Tenma will be an extraordinaire fighter. He gains the rank of Saint, and he is given a mission.

In this time, Alone is taken in a dark cathedral and prepared to become Hades. There, he is convinced that the only salvation that one can receive is death. He goes along, and he becomes Hades, King of the Underworld. His awakening provokes a moon eclipse, and the Holly War begins, with both Athena and Hades now in flesh and bone on Earth. We are given the perspective of a great 3rd part.

I want to say that this second episode impressed me much more than the first. Many important things occur, Sasha is revealed as Athena, Alone becomes Hades and Tenma becomes a Saint. I have a small impression that all will evolve towards something that will look like a Greek tragedy.

The animation works perfect, I even noticed the music this time. Still, this is not a must-see anime, but it is one that can satisfy the fans of Saint Seiya, showing the origins of their beloved heroes, and how it all started. Is like Star Wars episodes 1-3, not great as the original but satisfying because it reveals more about characters that we care about. Be ready for more from the part of Athena, Tenma (or is it Pegasus?) and Hades.
