Gainax or Gainax Company Limited was formed in 1980, under the name of Daicon Film. The founders were Hideaki Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Takami Akai, Toshio Okada, Yasuhiro Takeda and Shinji Higuchi, at that time university students. The studio made its debut with a short animated film at the Annual Japan National SF Convention from 1981, held in Osaka.
